Physiotherapist: 'Team GB's John Jackson has defied odds'

Team GB bobsleigher John Jackson has "defied the odds" by appearing at the Winter Olympics, says a physiotherapist who helped him with his rehabilitation.

A physiotherapist at the British Olympic Association's Intensive Rehabilitation Unit has claimed that bobsleigher John Jackson has "defied the odds" to appear at the Sochi Games.

Jackson, who competes for Team GB in the four-man bobsleigh event tomorrow, picked up an Achilles injury last summer and had to undergo pioneering surgery.

Despite admitting that he is not yet fully fit, just being at the Winter Olympics amazes physio Ashleigh Wallace.

"Six months and two weeks ago he ruptured his Achilles completely and that sort of injury should take a year to recover from," Wallace is quoted as saying by TeamGB.com. "There was no protocol for his rehab because [this type of surgery] had never been done before.

"We saw him 10 days after the operation and it was totally unknown territory for us. He was doing things at three weeks than we would normally do at nine weeks. What we do is point athletes in the right direction but it was his faith in himself that enabled him to get himself fit.

"He has defied the odds because of his mental strength, he has pushed himself to the limit and beyond."

Jackson was part of the side that won a silver medal for Britain in the men's World Cup.
