Jockeys want whip rule fines abolished

Jockeys want financial penalties for breaking the new whip rules to be abolished.

Jockeys have outlined a number of proposals to change the new whip rules, including ending fines for riders.

The controversial new rules came into effect on Monday, October 10, almost causing jockeys to strike earlier this week.

However, the Professional Jockeys Association (PJA) and Horse Racing Authority agreed to meet to discuss possible changes to the rules.

In addition to the removal of financial penalties, jockeys want the maximum of five hits in the final furlong or after the last jump to be abolished.

"Had we been properly consulted over some of the important details that relate directly to jockeys we feel that we would not be in the position we are today," said PJA chief executive Kevin Darley.

"Jockeys have no issues with the restricted amount of times they can use the whip under the new rules. The careers of jockeys are short by definition and the implications of financial penalties and long suspensions are savagely disproportionate."

Christophe Soumillon lost his £50,000 winnings from Champions Day at Ascot after he broke the new maximum hit rules.
