Irish jockey Tony McCoy has made history by riding his 4,000th career winner on Mountain Tunes at Towcester this afternoon.
The 39-year-old headed into the day on 3,999 winners, but failed to reach the milestone in the 2.10 Agetur UK Handicap Hurdle on Church Field, leaving the 3.10 Weatherbys Novices' Hurdle as his final chance.
McCoy stormed to the finish line on board Mountain Tunes, who is owned by his boss JP McManus, and the Irishman claimed that riding in the second race was his best chance of reaching the career high.
McCoy, who has twice won the Gold Cup at Cheltenham, needed just one successful ride after he guided Minella For Steak in the NFU Mutual Supports RABI Handicap Hurdle.
