Tony Smith wants fewer Super League teams

Warrington's head coach wants the number of Super League teams to be reduced to help improve the quality of rugby.

Warrington Wolves head coach Tony Smith wants the number of teams taking part in the Super League to be reduced.

Smith has suggested that there are not enough quality players to go around fourteen teams and that there are too many one-sided matches as a result.

His suggestion echoes the recent calls of Wolves hooker Michael Monaghan and Castleford coach Terry Matterson, who would like to see the league reduced to twelve teams.

"I'm not sure there is enough quality for fourteen," said Smith. "There's way too many matches that have shown that to be the case.

"It's a matter of opinion but I think there should be significant reviews done each year to assess whether the current competition is the strongest it can be.

"We always do that when the England team doesn't quite come up to scratch and it has a big relationship as to why our national team probably doesn't do as well as it should because it reflects the strength of our competition."

Warrington will bid for an eighth consecutive Super League win on Saturday night when they take on Catalan Dragons in Perpignan.
