England's James Willstrop: 'I gave everything I had against Nick Matthew'

James Willstrop says that he "gave everything" in his narrow men's singles final defeat against fellow Team England competitor Nick Matthew.

England's James Willstrop has insisted that he is "thrilled" to have won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games after losing in the men's singles finals.

The 30-year-old pushed compatriot Nick Matthew all the way in Glasgow, but fell just short as he succumbed to a 3-2 defeat.

Matthew, who has now won three gold medals at the last two Games, underwent an operation just five weeks before the start of the competition.

"I'm just so thrilled with what I've done this week," Willstrop told BBC Sport. "It's been an odd five weeks before this match. He's had an operation and I'm going to have one.

"What he's done is just amazing, to have that operation and to come out and play. Squash is a game where you need match fitness and he's had none.

"But I'm almost not disappointed because five weeks ago I almost wasn't playing. He just beat me squash-wise. I gave everything. I left it out there. My hip was moving in places I wasn't sure it should do a few weeks ago."

Willstrop also won silver in Delhi four years ago.
