Adam Brown was last up for the English as the 25-year-old out-paced James Magnussen in the final lap to set an all-time Games best of 3:31.51, less than a second better than the Aussies.
South Africa's quartet finished in third, coming in at a time of 3:34.47 to seal bronze on the podium ahead of Canada.
