Hungarian starlet Kristof Milak has recorded the second fastest time in history to take Olympic gold in the men's 200m butterfly.

The 21-year-old already holds the world record over the distance, setting a time of 1:50.73 two years ago, but today beat the legendary Michael Phelps's Olympic record in Tokyo.

Milak shaved more than three-quarters of a second off Phelps's 13-year-old record, touching the wall with a final time of 1:51.25 - albeit appearing disappointed that he had not smashed his own world record.

Japan's Tomoru Honda took the silver, some 2.48s back of the winning time, while Federico Burdisso of Italy held off Milak's countryman Tamas Kenderesi for the bronze.

Milak now turns his attention to the 100m fly, where he will look to defeat world record holder Caeleb Dressel of the USA.
