Ranomi Kromowidjojo has won a gold medal in the women's 100m freestyle for the Netherlands with an Olympic record finish time of 53.00s.

It was an incredibly close race, with no fewer than six swimmers in contention for the podium as the final length approached.

Team GB's Fran Halsall put in a strong swim, and was in contention for first place at one point, before slipping off the pace at the death to come sixth.

Aliaksandra Herasimenia battled to a second-place finish with a time of 53.38s to claim the silver medal for Belarus.

Yi Tang of China picked up bronze, while one of the pre-race favourites Missy Franklin had to settle for fifth.
