The reigning Olympic champion touched the wall with 1:40.86 on the clock to finish in third place behind Romania's David Popovici (1:40.79) and South Korean champion Hwang Sun-woo, who set a new Championship record with 1:39.72.

Dean's third-placed finish follows a bronze medal for Adam Peaty in the men's 100m breaststroke, while Ben Proud and Anna Hopkin won silver and bronze in the men's and women's 50m freestyle respectively.

Peaty, who admitted that he was left "angry" after winning a bronze medal in the men's 100m breaststroke, also competed in the final of the men's 50m breaststroke but could only place sixth with a time of 25.99.

The USA's Nic Fink claimed the gold medal in the 100m breaststroke and followed that up by taking the world title in the 50m event, posting a course record of time of 25.38 to beat Italian duo Nicolo Martinenghi and Simone Cerasuolo, who won silver and bronze respectively.

Elsewhere on the final day of competition in Melbourne, the USA and Australia incredibly shared a new world record time of 3:18.98 in the men's 4x100m medley relay to claim a pair of world titles.

Italy set a new European record of 3:19.06 as they scooped the bronze in the men's event, and the women's race in the same category also saw the USA become world record holders, posting 3:44.35 to finish first.

Canada's Margaret Mac Neil also set another new world record of 54.05 in the women's 100m butterfly to win her third gold medal of the Championships, having also become champion in the 100m butterfly and 50m backstroke.

There would be one more gold medal for the home crowd to celebrate in the women's 200m backstroke for Kaylee McKeown (1:59.26), while Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte stormed to the women's 50m breaststroke gold in 28.50 seconds.
