South Africa's Chad le Clos has won the 50m butterfly gold at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
The event proved controversial on the first day of the Games when defending champion and Games record-holder Ben Proud was disqualified during the heats stage after he was adjudged to have started too early.
Proud's early bath paved the way for Le Clos, a 12-time Commonwealths medallist, to take his title and he duly did so with a time of 23.37 seconds, some 0.3 seconds faster than nearest challenger Dylan Carter of Trinidad and Tobago.
The battle for bronze saw Le Clos's teammate Ryan Coetzee edge ahead of local favourite Grant Irvine by a margin of just 0.03 seconds.
Team England's sole representative in the final, 17-year-old Games debutant Jacob Peters, finished a respectable seventh with a time of 24.00 seconds - the third time he has earned a new personal best in the last two days.
