Cameron van der Burgh: 'Breaking world record makes up for losing gold'

Cameron van der Burgh says that breaking a world record in the 50m breaststroke makes up for missing out on gold in the 100m final at the Worlds.

South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh has suggested that breaking a world record in the 50m breaststroke is consolation for failing to win gold in the 100m final at the World Championships last night.

This morning, the 27-year-old equalled Adam Peaty's unofficial record of 26.62s as he comfortably won his 50m heat in Kazan.

On Monday night, Van der Burgh led the way in the 100m breaststroke final, but Peaty, who won four European titles for Great Britain last year, just edged ahead to take the top spot on the podium.

"I am happy after the bitter disappointment last night of being out of luck at the touch," SwimVortex quotes Van der Burgh as saying. "Today I had the luck of a good touch at the finish and that is the difference between a world record and not having a world record."

Peaty made it safely through to tonight's 50m semi-finals by winning his heat in 26.68s.
