Commonwealth and European champion Jazz Carlin is voted British Swimming's Athlete of the Year.

Jazz Carlin has been named British Swimming Athlete of the Year after winning gold at both the Commonwealth Games and European Championships.

The 24-year-old secured 78% of the vote, beating Fran Halsall, Adam Peaty, Ross Murdoch and Siobhan-Marie O'Connor.

Carlin had a historical 2014 by becoming the first Welsh female in 40 years to be crowned Commonwealth champion by winning the 800m freestyle.

The Brit also won both the 800m and 400m at the European Championships in Berlin before going on to clinch silver in the 800m at the FINA World Championships in Doha.

"It's a real honour to have been voted British Swimming Athlete of the Year," Carlin said. "Thank you to everyone that has voted for me. This year has been amazing but I am working hard for 2015 now and have my sights set on an Olympic spot in 2016."

Head coach Bill Furniss added: "She performed well at the Commonwealth Games and then swam even better at the European Championships just a couple of weeks later.

"To take on the likes of world medallist Lauren Boyle at the Commonwealths and the likes of Mireira Belmonte at the Europeans was great to see. She showed real character in her victories and in Berlin not only did she race well but she paced her 800 perfectly."

Great Britain topped the medal table at the European Championships with 27, 11 of which were gold.
