Adam Peaty has tested positive for coronavirus, a day after narrowly missing out on yet another Olympic gold medal.

On Sunday evening, the British swimming legend was attempting to win a third successive gold in the men's 100m breaststroke.

However, Peaty would agonisingly be forced into the silver-medal position, losing out to Italy's Nicolo Martinenghi by just 0.02 seconds.

The 29-year-old indicated after the race that he had a minor sore throat, subsequently resulting him taking a coronavirus test on Monday morning.

With that test coming back positive, it has left Peaty facing a race against time to try to recover in time before the remainder of his races.

Is Peaty allowed to compete?

At the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, there were far stricter protocols in place than there are in Paris, giving Peaty a chance to continue to participate.

In a statement, Team GB said that Peaty was "hopeful to be back in competition" over the coming days, his next race not scheduled until Friday.

That at least buys him some time ahead of decisions being made over whether he will be allowed to feature in the relays.

Peaty is in contention to either be a part of the men's or mixed 4x100m relay, the latter discipline taking place a day later on the Saturday.

In theory, that may appear to be a more realistic target than taking part in the men's race on Friday morning.

What has Peaty had to say?

When addressing the situation, Peaty remained upbeat, saying: "I'll now be focusing on a fast, full recovery to give my best in the team relays later in the week.

"I've had so many messages and I'll get back to you all, thank you for your support as it has truly been an unforgettable journey."

Peaty has a total of three golds and three silvers at the Olympics, three of which have come in relay races. body check tags ::
