Team GB have finished second in the men's 4x100m medley, the final event of the swimming programme in Tokyo, to record their best ever performance in the pool at the Olympics.

GB fielded a team of swimmers who had all already earned a medal in Japan - with Luke Greenbank on the backstroke leg, Adam Peaty on breaststroke, James Guy on fly and Duncan Scott with the freestyle leg.

Hopes were high for another gold to end the Games in style, then, but it was not to be as the team from the USA swam a superb race for the title, setting a new world record of 3:26.78 in the process.

The team included superstar Caeleb Dressel, who now has seven Olympic golds to his name - including a phenomenal five in Tokyo - while their race included a brilliant final leg of 46.95 seconds from Zach Apple.

For Team GB, the result means that the swimming team have now managed their best ever performance in the pool at the Olympics, surpassing the record of London 1908 to head back home with a haul of four golds, three silvers and a bronze.

Scott, meanwhile, earns the accolade of the most medals won by a Brit at a single Olympics, with his gold and three silvers taking him past the likes of Sir Chris Hoy and Sir Bradley Wiggins. body check tags ::
