British swimmers Adam Peaty and Ross Murdoch have both progressed to the semi-finals of the men's 100m breaststroke event at the World Swimming Championships after winning their heats.

Peaty, who is the reigning Commonwealth and European champion, set the fastest time of any swimmer at the Kazan Arena, breaking the Championship record with a time of 58.52.

Murdoch, who won the 200m gold at last year's Commonwealth Games and bronze in the 100m, finished strongly to win his heat, setting the fourth fastest time across nine qualifying races for the semi-finals.

However, Australia's Christian Sprenger, who was the defending world champion and won silver at the 2012 Olympics, failed to qualify, having only recently returned to the pool after a spell out injured.

The semi-finals take place later, before the medals are decided tomorrow.
