The host nation impressed in the 2012 Olympics pool.

Alice Tai was one of nine medallists for the British Para Swimming team on day two at the World Para Swimming Championships in London.

The 20-year-old claimed gold in the Women's S8 100m backstroke final and in the process broke her own world record with a time of one minute 08.04 seconds.

Tai told the British Swimming website: "I thought 'oh gosh I'm going to really have to push it here to get this world record.' I really wasn't expecting it and I'm quite emotional."

GB team-mate Megan Richter finished third in the same event to claim bronze, but Tully Kearney was able to celebrate gold in the Women's S5 200m freestyle with 2.46.92.

It was Kearney's second gold of the meet, she said: "I knew I had to go out quick and stay ahead so that's what I tried to do."

Bethany Firth joined Tai and Kearney in winning gold medals, with first place in the Women's S14 100m backstroke after recording a time of 1.05.97.

Stephen Clegg set a new British record on his way to silver in the Men's S12 100m butterfly final.

Jordan Catchpole and Louis Lawlor also secured medals, both in the final of the Men's S14 100m backstroke.

Catchpole picked up silver while Lawlor clinched bronze with under a second separating the British swimmers.

Wrapping up the medal winners was Maisie Summers-Newton, who claimed bronze in the Women's S6 100m freestyle final.

Elsewhere, Rhys Davies placed eighth in the S14 100m backstroke, Ellie Robinson just missed out on a medal to Summers-Newton while Stephanie Millward finished fourth in the S9 100m backstroke and Mikey Jones came eighth in the S7 400m freestyle.
