England come from behind to beat India 3-2 in the final of the table tennis men's doubles at the Commonwealth Games, handing Paul Drinkhall and Liam Pitchford gold medals.

England have come from behind to beat India 3-2 in the men's doubles table tennis final at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The English pair of Paul Drinkhall and Liam Pitchford sealed the gold medal at Oxenford Studios on the Gold Coast, having also beaten Indian opposition in the semi-finals on Friday.

While their last-four contest was wrapped up within three games, though, the final went the distance as the Indian duo of Sharath Achanta and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran provided sterner opposition than their compatriots.

Drinkhall and Pitchford had only dropped sets in one of their four games en route to the final, and they looked on course for another clean sweep when they won the opener 11-5.

However, the Indian pair fought back to win a tight second set 12-10 before moving into the lead with an 11-9 triumph in the third.

England suddenly found themselves one set away from defeat, but they recovered with an 11-6 victory in the fourth to set up a decider, which they went on to win 11-8 to clinch the gold medal.

The medal is Drinkhall's second gold and sixth overall at the Commonwealth Games, whereas Pitchford picks up his first Commonwealth gold after previously winning three silvers and three bronzes.
