British number three Kyle Edmund comes through an epic three-set contest with Dane Propoggia to qualify for the main draw of the Australian Open.

Kyle Edmund has made it through to the main draw of the Australian Open after coming from behind to defeat local favourite Dane Propoggia.

The British number three, who has never previously competed in a Grand Slam tournament outside of Wimbledon, let slip a match point before coming through 6-7 6-4 9-7.

During the early stages the 20-year-old found himself fighting against the odds as Propoggia, roared on by a strong support, edged the first set before remaining consistent during the majority of the second.

However, Edmund broke serve towards the end of the set to take the contest into a decider before creating an opportunity for himself to serve for his place in the main draw.

Propoggia struck back, though, to extend the match, and after both held serve during the following six games, it appeared as though the world number 323 would make it 8-8 after moving to 40-0 behind his own delivery.

Edmund wasn't finished, though, and after getting back to deuce, a backhand winner from the Brit and a netted volley from Progoggia were enough to seal victory for the Beverley-based player.

World number 39 Steve Johnson lies in wait for Edmund in the first round, with that match likely to take place on Tuesday.

British compatriot Liam Broady was unable to match Edmund's achievement as he bowed out 7-5 6-3 to veteran American Michael Russell.
