Fabio Fognini reaches round two of the Australian Open for the first time since 2009, progressing at the expense of Alex Bogomolov, who retires hurt.

Fabio Fognini has reached round two of the Australian Open for the first time since 2009.

The 15th seed was 6-3 6-2 up against Alex Bogomolov when the Russian retired hurt after just under an hour and a half on court.

Bogomolov had looked uncomfortable for much of the match and had produced a host of ugly mistakes. He made 11 double faults and 46 unforced errors.

Fognini will play Jarkko Nieminen next. The Finn booked his place in the second round with a 3-6 7-6 6-7 6-3 6-3 victory over Israel's Dudi Sela.
