Fabio Fognini has reached round two of the Australian Open for the first time since 2009.
The 15th seed was 6-3 6-2 up against Alex Bogomolov when the Russian retired hurt after just under an hour and a half on court.
Bogomolov had looked uncomfortable for much of the match and had produced a host of ugly mistakes. He made 11 double faults and 46 unforced errors.
Fognini will play Jarkko Nieminen next. The Finn booked his place in the second round with a 3-6 7-6 6-7 6-3 6-3 victory over Israel's Dudi Sela.
