Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has progressed to round two of the 2014 Australian Open by beating Italy's Filippo Volandri 7-5 6-3 6-3.
Volandri caused a shock when he hit a brilliant cross-court backhand pass to break the 10th seed in game three of the opening set.
However, Tsonga fought back and, after taking the first set inside 41 minutes, he did not face a single break point in sets two or three.
The 2008 finalist hit 15 aces, 36 winners and won 12 of 15 points at the net.
He will face either Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci or Germany's Julian Reister next.
