A spirited Cameron Norrie was knocked out of the French Open in the third round by Russia's Karen Khachanov during a four-set battle on Friday evening.

The British number one was bidding to reach the last 16 of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career but went down 2-6 5-7 7-5 4-6 to his 6ft 6in opponent.

The sheer power of Khachanov blew Norrie away early doors, although the Brit was presented with numerous opportunities to break his opponent's serve but failed to take most of them.

Norrie squandered eight break points in the first set before taking advantage of some Khachanov errors to break back for 4-4 in the second set, and he proceeded to move onto set point on the Khachanov serve.

However, the world number 25 saved it before moving to within one set of advancing to round four after a plethora of wayward shots from Norrie, who came out fighting soon after.

The world number 11 managed to reduce the deficit and force a fourth set after Khachanov netted, but the Russian quickly moved onto match point with a 5-2 lead.

A resilient Norrie incredibly managed to save three match points before winning back-to-back games, but a seventh ace saw Khachanov survive a late scare and end the British singles representation at Roland Garros for this year.

Khachanov's fourth-round opponent will be Spanish teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz, who posted a 6-4 6-4 6-2 win over Sebastian Korda on the same evening. body check tags ::
