Andy Murray says he is not one of the favourites for this month's French Open title, despite overcoming Rafael Nadal in the Madrid Masters final.

Andy Murray has played down suggestions that he is one of the favourites to win the French Open, which gets underway in a fortnight.

The Scot remains unbeaten on clay so far this year, after beating Rafael Nadal in straight sets to lift the Madrid Masters crown – his second title in six days.

However, despite winning against Nadal, Murray refused to get carried away regarding his chances of a third Grand Slam victory in Paris.

He told Sky Sports: "I have played well in Roland Garros at the past - two semi-finals and a couple of quarters.

"Last year my game was not ready to win the event whereas the previous time against Rafa there I played well. I have pushed Rafa a few times on the clay and this obviously gives me confidence.

"I don't think I would go into the French as one of the favourites but if I play like that I'll give myself an opportunity."

Murray is also yet to confirm whether he will compete in this week's Masters event in Rome, which starts on Monday morning.
