Nicolas Almagro will fight another day in the French Open after claiming a 6-3 7-5 4-6 victory over Paolo Lorenzi in Paris.
The 26-year-old Spaniard was the first to take the break in the first-round contest, which allowed him to take control of the clay court and impose his style, which prevented Lorenzi from making a significant impact.
After taking a one-set lead Almagro faced tougher competition from his Italian opponent, who managed to force an extra game in the second set.
Despite the 30-year-old's attempted comeback, it was Almagro who managed to see out the second set and take a vital lead in the contest.
The number 12 seed was successful in securing a spot in the second round of the tournament following a positive performance in the third and final round.
