Last year's French Open runner-up Simona Halep has been dumped out of this year's tournament at Roland Garros in the second round by world number 70 Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.
The first set was a topsy-turvy affair on the Philippe Chatrier court as Halep twice hit straight back after Lucic-Baroni had broken to move ahead.
However, with a tie-break on the cards, Lucic-Baroni broke for a third time in the 12th and final game before the break to snatch the opener 7-5.
The second was nowhere near as close, with Croatia's Lucic-Baroni, a former Wimbledon semi-finalist, racing into a 5-0 lead before closing it out 6-1.
World number three Halep, who lost to Maria Sharapova in last year's final, appeared to be struggling with a hand injury in the second set as she offered little resistance to Lucic-Baroni's big hitting.
Lucic-Baroni maintains her 100% record against Halep after also knocking her out of a Grand Slam at last year's US Open. She will face home favourite Alize Cornet, the 29th seed, in round three at Roland Garros.
