Li Na has progressed into the second round of the French Open by defeating Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3 6-4 in Paris.
The number six seed took early control of the contest by securing a break at the first time of asking and pushing on to a 3-0 lead, but Medina Garrigues fought back to even up the scoreline.
Despite executing some strong shots across the clay court, Li was too strong for her opponent, as she snatched another vital break to move on and take a one-set lead.
The second set started off with both competitors evenly matched and games going by the way of serve, and while Li looked likely to wrap up the contest when she took a vital break, Medina Garrigues fought back to 4-4.
Despite her comeback, it wasn't enough to cause an upset as Li immediately responded to take the lead once again and book a place in the next round.
