Feliciano Lopez has suffered a surprise first-round defeat at the French Open to world number 74 Teymuraz Gabashvili.

Gabashvili came through the opening set 6-3 before going on to tighten his grip on the match by taking the second 7-6[9] against the 11th seed.

There was little to separate the men during the deciding set, but it was the Russian who eventually prevailed 6-3 7-6[9] 6-3 to seal his progress.

Gabashvili will now meet Argentine world number 35 Juan Monaco for a place in the third round at Roland Garros.
