Ekaterina Makarova has booked her place in the second round of the French Open with a 6-4 6-2 victory over American wildcard Louisa Chirico.
The ninth seed broke in the first game of the match before opening up a 3-1 lead, but she failed to tighten her grip on the set by squandering three more break points.
Makarova then missed five set points at 3-5, though she recovered to serve out the opening set 6-4 with 46 minutes on the clock.
While both players struggled to hold serve in the second, it was Russian world number nine Makarova who eventually came through 6-4 6-2 to seal her place in the next round of the tournament.
