Eighth seed Carla Suarez Navarro has been knocked out of the French Open in the third round following a 6-3 6-4 defeat to Flavia Pennetta at Roland Garros this evening.
Both players struggled with their serve in the first set, with the Spaniard quickly cancelling out an early break from the Italian in the first set.
The 28th seed soon had another chance though, as Suarez Navarro made a couple of double faults to put her opponent back in front, allowing Pennetta to serve the set out a couple of games later.
Pennetta continued to put the eighth seed under pressure at the start of the second set with some well-timed shots at the net, but the Spaniard responded to keep the set level.
The Italian edged back in front as Suarez Navarro continued to struggle with her serve, leaving Pennetta to serve it out in the next game.
Pennetta will play 21st seed Garbine Muguruza in the next round.
