Defending champion Serena Williams has crashed out in the second round of the French Open against world number 35 Garbine Muguruza.
The defeat marks the second time in three years that the world number one has failed to get past the second round at Roland Garros.
The American, who was seeded first, struggled to find her rhythm during the opening set as the Spaniard broke twice on her way to closing it out 6-2.
Williams, usually so assured in her serving, was broken a further three times by Muguruza in the second before the 20-year-old sealed the surprise win 6-2 6-2.
The loss means that it is the first time in women's Grand Slam singles history that the top two seeds have not reached the second round following Li Na's defeat to Kristina Mladenovic on Tuesday.
