John Isner is through to the fourth round of Indian Wells following a hard-fought straight-sets win over Juan Monaco in California.
The towering American saved two break points before claiming one of his own to narrowly edge the first set 7-5.
Isner - ranked world number eleven - then served well in the second set, producing six aces, but was frustrated by a stubborn Monaco defence.
However the 26-year-old broke in the 12th game to secure a 7-5 7-5 victory, his first win over the world number 22.
With the result, Isner could face fellow American Mardy Fish in the next round, should the world number eight beat qualifier Matthew Ebden.
