Unseeded Albert Ramos marked his Indian Wells debut by defeating world number 16 Richard Gasquet 3-6 7-5 6-1.
There were no signs of an upset in set one, as Gasquet broke three times before converting with his first set point on serve.
The Frenchman then went further ahead at the start of the second with an early break to lead 2-1 on games.
Big serving, especially from the 188cm Spaniard, dominated the next six games until, with Gasquet serving for the match, Ramos hit his way to consecutive breaks and levelled the tie.
Gasquet did not appear to be prepared for a third set and Ramos caught him cold by winning the first five games in a row before holding his nerve for a career-high win.
