Maria Sharapova is through to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells courtesy of a straight-sets victory over Yanina Wickmayer.
The second seed looked to be heading for an easy win after racing through the opening set to win it 6-1.
Sharapova was made to work in the second by Wickmayer, who needed to save eight of nine break points to remain in the match.
However, the Russian star eventually wore down her opponent to wrap up the second set 7-5 and progress into round three after almost two hours of toil.
Sharapova now meets the winner of the clash between Victoria Azarenka and Kirsten Flipkens.
