Sports Mole

Good morning and welcome to Sports Mole's live text commentary from day three of the Olympic tennis at Wimbledon.

With typical British timing, play was suspended yesterday following some heavy storms at the All England Club which means that it's a jam-packed schedule today of both first and second round matches.

Roger Federer, Juan Martin del Potro and Marin Cilic are all in action for the men, while the British trio of Laura Robson, Heather Watson and Elena Baltacha continue their quests for Olympic glory.

Both the Williams sisters are on court later today, not to mention world number one and top seed Victoria Azarenka.

Please note that play is due to start at 11.30am.

20.51The defending gold medallists will next take on the Israeli duo of Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich in round two.

20.49Soeda produces some unbelievable defence at deuce but Federer batters him with smashes and finally breaks the resistance, fist-pumping extravangantly. At match point Nishikori returns long and that's that.

20.47Federer has a match point but he gets a backhand straight at him that he can't get back. We're at deuce.

20.46They're denied as the Swiss put together an outstanding point to hold on. Federer celebrates as if he's won the match.

20.45Wow. The seven-time Wimbledon champion clips the tape with a forehand and the Japanese have a break-back point.

20.4530-30 as Nishikori foxes both Swiss men with a lob return. Big serve for Fed.

20.44Hello. Fed is presented with a fairly simple backhand volley but finds the net. 15-15.

20.43The star begins with an ace.

Soeda/Nishikori 7-6[5] 4-6 4-5* Federer/WawrinkaGood hold from the Japanese in a game that included one of those majestic Federer one-handed backhands. RF will now serve for the match...

Soeda/Nishikori 7-6[5] 4-6 *3-5 Federer/WawrinkaTwo aces in a row from Stan the man see the Swiss defending champions move within a game of victory.

20.40Tomorrow's order of play has been released and my trusty colleague Jack has summed it all up for you right here.

20.39It's the turn of Wawrinka to step up on serve.

20.38Just hearing that all other matches on the outside courts have been suspended for bad light as the crowd on No. 1 give us a mexican wave.

Soeda/Nishikori 7-6[5] 4-6 3-4* Federer/WawrinkaThe Swiss pair will want to get this done and dusted soon because the light is seriously fading at SW19. Very dark in No. 1 Court at the moment as Nishikori matches Federer with a love-hold.

Soeda/Nishikori 7-6[5] 4-6 *2-4 Federer/WawrinkaIt's so useful having a man like Federer on your team. The singles world number one's serve is immaculate as he holds to-love.

Soeda/Nishikori 7-6[5] 4-6 2-3* Federer/WawrinkaSoeda finds the line with a forehand and it's over to Federer to deliver on serve.

20.32Two break-point chances have now gone for the Swiss pair as the Japanese now have a chance to hold serve and keep the pressure up.

20.30Wawrinka pounces at the net and the Swiss have a chance of a double break.

20.30Soeda double faults on the next and it's now precarious for the Japanese at deuce.

20.29Federer lets out a huge roar of anguish as he misfires on a return at 30-30.

Soeda/Nishikori 7-6[5] 4-6 *1-3 Federer/WawrinkaThe Swiss duo are looking good as Wawrinka stays strong on serve to open up a two-game lead.

Soeda/Nishikori 7-6[5] 4-6 1-2* Federer/WawrinkaBREAK! Wawrinka's return is too good for the Japanese and the defending gold medallists have the advantage in the decider!

20.22All four men are in red and Nishikori is facing a break point at 30-40.

Soeda/Nishikori 7-6[5] 4-6 *1-1 Federer/WawrinkaFederer holds with ease and the pressure is back on the Japanese pair.

20.17This doubles match is taking place on the second showcourt, No. 1, and Federer is now serving at 0-1 in the decider.

20.14SET! Just one game left for us to focus on this evening and it involves a certain Mr Federer. The Swiss great and his partner Wawrinka have just levelled their first-round match with the Japanese by taking the second 6-4.

Wickmayer 4-6 6-3 3-6 WozniackiGAME, SET AND MATCH! Sweet Caroline, we have a winner! Wickmayer is trying her best to stay in the rally but Wozniacki is too strong and the Belgian hits long. The eighth seed is through but only just and she'll now face Slovakian stunner Daniela Hantuchova in round three.

20.08And now two match points...

20.08An ace out-wide from Wozniacki puts her within two points of victory.

20.07This is wonderfully dogged play from Wickmayer. Wozniacki's defence is equally robust but the Belgian won't lie down. 15-15.

Wickmayer 4-6 6-3 3-5* WozniackiWickmayer forces Wozniacki to serve it out. Can the Dane hold her nerve?

20.03GAME, SET AND MATCH! The Germans serve it out and it won't be Baltacha and Keothavong in the second round.

20.00DOUBLE BREAK! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Keothavong and Baltacha are now a double break down in the second set against Goerges and Groenefeld at 1-5. One game from exiting the 'lympics.

Wickmayer 4-6 6-3 *2-5 WozniackiWozniacki shows no nerves on Centre as she too calms things down on her own serve to move within a game of victory.

Wickmayer 4-6 6-3 2-4 WozniackiNo such problems for Wickmayer on serve as she holds to-15. Over to you, Caroline.

19.52As well as missing out on a host of game points before tying that mammoth game up, Wozniacki saved/Wickmayer missed out on seven break points!

Wickmayer 4-6 6-3 *1-4 WozniackiWozniacki holds and listen to this, that game went 13 deuces before the Dane prevailed. Unbelievable.

19.48Still going in this epic game...

19.44Wozniacki's having to battle so hard to hang on to her serve against Wickmayer! Back to deuce.

19.43BREAK! Defending doubles champions Federer and Wawrinka have done exactly what they needed to at the start of the second by breaking the Japanese serve. 2-0 they lead.

19.40GAME, SET AND MATCH! Easy peasy for the Polish girls as they wrap up victory against Hantuchova and Cibulkova 6-2 6-1. They'll next face number one seeds Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond of the USA.

19.34DOUBLE BREAK! The Polish Radwanska sisters are charging to victory on Court 16 and are now two games from victory.

Wickmayer 4-6 6-3 1-3* WozniackiWickmayer gets on the board in the third set and will now look to break the Dane's serve on Centre.

19.32SETS! Baltacha and Keothavong have it all to do as the Germans take the opening set 6-3. Men's singles number one Federer also has to come up with the goods as his duo is a set down to the Japanese after defeat in the first-set tie-break.

19.30Over on 16, the Radwanska sisters have another break of serve in the second set and look to be on their way to the second round.

Wickmayer 4-6 6-3 *0-3 WozniackiWhoosh. Wozniacki reels off two games in a row by winning eight points in succession. The eighth seed now has clear daylight in the decider.

19.24The Swiss pair of Federer and Wawrinka are into a first-set tie-break against the Japanese duo of Soeda and Nishikori.

19.22BREAK! The British doubles pair of Keothavong and Baltacha are 4-2 down in the first set against the German pair of Goerges and Groenefeld. Come on gals!

Wickmayer 4-6 6-3 *0-1 WozniackiWozniacki holds to-15 to get the deciding set off to the best possible start from a Danish perspective.

Wickmayer 4-6 6-3 WozniackiSET! The Belgian shows no nerves by holding to-love to send us into a deciding third set here.

19.13SET! The Radwanska sisters of Poland have taken the first set 6-2 agains the Slovakians Hantuchova and Cibulkova.

19.11So, Wickmayer is about to serve for the second set and level the match.

19.08And just like that I'm going to hand you over to my colleague Pascal Lemesre once more...

19.07SET! Tipsarevic/Zimonjic 6-3 Klizan/Lacko

19.04Oh yes. Wickmayers has her opponent scrambling around the court and finally holds when Wozniacki gets down low at the net only to flick her shot into it. Wickmayer leads 5-2 now.

19.02It's also woth noting that both of these women's were knocked out by Austria's Tamira Paszek at this year's Wimbledon Championships - Wozniacki in the first round, Wickmayer in the third...

18.59Wozniacki holds again and she trails 2-4 in this second set.

18.58Some jousting at the net ends with Wozniacki lashing a volley that would have probably taken Wickmayer's head off had it made contact.

18.57It might not be a good time to tell Yanina Wickmayer, but she's lost all five of her previous matches with 'the Woz'. They've never met on grass though...

18.55Wickmayer makes it look so easy as she holds to love and edge closer to taking this set.

18.53The Dane finally holds and gets on the board in this second set. Wickmayer still leads 3-1 though.

18.48Wickmayer looking very pumped up now as she holds to storm into a 3-0 lead. Wozniacki needs to put this fire out and fast.

18.45BREAK! Wickmayer squanders the first but Wozniacki make the error on the second and the Belgian is 2-0 up in this second set.

18.43Belgian Wickmayer brings up two break points...

18.41Wickmayer holds and skips back to her chair quickly, looking very determined.

18.32GAME, SET AND MATCH! Dimitrov saves two match points at 40-15 but can't save the third and it's Simon of France who'll face Del Potro in the third round of the men's singles.

18.23GAME, SET AND MATCH! Petra Kvitova knows who she'll be playing in the third round of the women's singles as Flavia Pennetta of Italy wraps up an easy win over Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova.

17.57The doubles match between Peya/Melzer and Ferrer/Lopez is a bit of an epic. They're in a deciding third set and it's 8-7 to the Spanish pair. No tie-breaks, remember.

17.23The eighth seed will battle for a place in round four with either 12th seed Gilles Simon or Roger Federer copycat Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.

17.01Ivanovic holds to-30 over on 18 and Baltacha must yet again hold serve to stay in the match.

16.59GAME, SET AND MATCH! While I was watching Baltacha hang on, Darcis of Belgium ousted Colombia's Giraldo in three. He'll face Spanish 11th seed Almagro in the third round. Darcis is having a great run at the Games having beaten Tomas Berdych in the opening round.

Robson 6-5* SafarovaIt's a great hold from Robson. That game looked touch and go for a moment but her serve remains reliable and she wins her first game in five. Pressure back on Safarova.

13.40GAME, SET AND MATCH! Stepanek 4-6 3-6 Davydenko

Azarenka 6-1 3-6 0-1* BeguBREAK! And just like that the top seed is on the back foot. She didn't look convincing in that game and paid the price by slamming her forehand into the net. Could we have another huge upset on our hands here at the Olympics?

13.34GAME, SET AND MATCH! Lepchenko 7-6 6-7[6] 6-2 Cepede

Azarenka 6-1 3-6 *0-0 BeguAzarenka will get us underway in this deciding set...

13.32Now then, this is a bit of a turn up. Judging by that first set it looked like Azarenka was going to breeze through this one, but the Romanian world number 79 has put herself right back into contention by taking this second set 6-3. It's all to play for now.

13.30SET! Azarenka 6-1 3-6 Begu

13.30GAME, SET AND MATCH! Goffin 4-6 1-6 Monaco

Azarenka 6-1 3-5* BeguAfter a thrilling rally Azarenka holds. Begu will now serve for this second set and to level the match.

13.26SET! Kirilenko 6-0 Duque-Marino, Lisicki 4-6 6-0 Jabeur

13.25GAME, SET AND MATCH! Hewitt 6-3 4-6 6-3 Strakhovsky

13.21Anyway, no hanging around here. We're now off to Centre Court to see Belarusian top seed Victoria Azarenka take on Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania. Azarenka took the opening set 6-1 but she now finds herself 5-2 down and serving to stay in the second.

13.20Andy Roddick lets out a huge "YEEEEAAAAHHHH!!!" as Klizan whacks a forehand to wide to give the American the victory. It wasn't pretty but Roddick forces his way through to the second round where he will meet, gulp, Novak Djokovic.

13.18GAME, SET AND MATCH! Roddick 7-5 6-4 Klizan

13.17GAME, SET AND MATCH! Zheng 4-6 3-6 Petrova

13.15GAME, SET AND MATCH! Cilic 7-6[5] 6-2 Melzer

Roddick 7-5 5-4* KlizanRoddick holds so Klizan will be serving stay in the match.

Roddick 7-5 *4-4 KlizanA wonderful crosscourt backhand winner gives Klizan the hold. However Roddick will again be cursing himself after giving himself another chance of the break.

13.05SET! Tursunov 7-6[5] 2-6 Lopez

13.00SET! Lisicki 4-6 Jabeur

Roddick 7-5 4-3* KlizanRoddick now holds to love with a trademark ace. He should be able to wrap this one up but Klizan is proving to be more pesky than many imagined.

Roddick 7-5 *3-3 KlizanKlizan looked very confident in that game as he holds to bring himself level at 3-3.

12.54SET! Goffin 4-6 Monaco

Roddick 7-5 3-2* KlizanThe umpire was drawn into a, shall we say, 'discussion' with Roddick there over one particular point but the American holds.

12.50SET! Hewitt 6-3 4-6 Strakhovsky

Roddick 7-5 *2-2 KlizanRoddick is making this a lot more difficult for himself than it needs to be. He squanders another break point as Klizan holds again.

12.46GAME, SET AND MATCH! Martinez Sanchez 6-2 6-4 Hercog

12.46GAME, SET AND MATCH! Ito 3-6 4-6 Raonic

12.45GAME, SET AND MATCH! Gasquet 6-3 6-3 Haase

Roddick 7-5 2-1* KlizanAgain Roddick holds comfortably following the labours of the previous game.

12.41SET! Zheng 4-6 Petrova

12.41GAME, SET AND MATCH! Erakovic 2-6 1-6 Wozniack

Roddick 7-5 *1-1 KlizanRoddick will be cursing himself there. He throws away four break points as Klizan fights back to hold. That was a real opening for the American world number 22.

12.38SET! Azarenka 6-1 Begu

12.36SET! Cilic 7-6[5] Melzer

12.32SET! Tursunov 7-6[5] Lopez

Roddick 7-5 1-0* KlizanRoddick gets this second set up and running with a hold of serve.

12.30Unfortunately for Petra Cetkovska the Czech is unable to go on in her match with Angelique Kerber and has to retire through injury. The German goes through.

12.29Kerber 6-3 3-0 Cetkovska [retired]

12.28To update, Belarusian top seed Victoria Azarenka is in control in the first set against Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu as she takes a 3-1 lead.

12.27Excellent stuff from Roddick as he battles away to find the decisive break and take the set. Klizan will be cursing himself after he fluffed a simple volley which would have seen him hold. Instead, Roddick won the point, took it to deuce and eventually overcame the Slovakian.

12.26SET! Roddick 7-5 Klizan

Roddick 6-5* KlizanRoddick holds with a ferocious volley at the net. Klizan had given up on the point with his looping return but the American drives the point home as a real statement of intent. Klizan will again serve to stay in this set.

12.17SET! Ito 3-6 Raonic, Hewitt 6-3 Stakhovsky

Roddick *5-5 KlizanKlizan lashes an powerful and precise forehand winner down the line on his way to holding serve. This one looks like it's heading to a tie-break...

12.12Top women's seed Victoria Azarenka has just started her first-round match with Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu. We'll keep you updated with that one.

Roddick 5-4* KlizanWith all the huff and puff of the last game, Roddick holds to love in about 20 seconds. Klizan serving to stay in this opening set.

12.11SET! Erakovic 2-6 Wozniack

Roddick *4-4 KlizanThat was a gruelling game for both men but Klizan saves a couple of break points to hold. A real chance wasted for Roddick.

12.09SET! Gasquet 6-3 Haase, Kerber 6-1 Cetkovska, Martina Sanchez 6-2 Hercog

11.59It's worth remembering that Roddick and men's doubles partner John Isner were knocked out in the first round of the doubles by Brazil's Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soare so the world number 22 won't be giving this one up easily today.

Roddick 4-3* KlizanRoddick again blocks everything out at the net and brings up the hold.

Roddick *3-3 KlizanWhile Roddick is one of the games great servers, Klizan is giving his opponent plenty of trouble with his. It's now 3-3.

Roddick 3-2* KlizanRoddick is looking very dangerous at the net as he hits back a volley to hold. The American is moving around with some impressive agility already here.

Roddick *2-2 KlizanRoddick has the sniff of a break in that one but Klizan comes back and holds with a wonderful sliced volley from the middle of the court.

Roddick 2-1* KlizanAs you can imagine the crowd are fully behind Roddick and cheers wildly as he holds again.

Roddick *1-1 KlizanKlizan, who is left-handed, look more than a little capable out there as he holds to get himself off the mark.

Roddick 1-0* KlizanRoddick gets his Olympic singles campaign underway with a hold of serve. Good news for the organisers is that Court 2 looks packed.

11.38Meanwhile, the other matches are getting underway on the outside courts. We'll bring you updates as soon as anything happens. Roddick to serve in this one.

11.37There's a crying baby in the crowd. Roddick won't like that.

11.36Actually, we're not. Instead we're going for American Andy Roddick's encounter with Slovakian Martin Klizan.

11.34Firts up we'll be following Croatian 13th seed Marin Cilic's match with Austria's Jurgen Melzer.

11.32Okay then, play on day three of the Olympic tennis is just minutes away...

11.27Federer can join an elite club if he picks up an Olympic singles medal this year as he would become only the fifth man to win a medal and a Grand Slam in the same year following his recnt success at Wimbledon. Reginald Doherty (1900), Stefan Edberg (1988), Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic (both 2008) are the others.

11.23Another interesting match that we've got today is Roger Federer's encounter with Frenchman Julien Benneteau. The pair met in the third round of Wimbledon as Benneteau squandered a two-set lead to the eventual champion. Federer won't be able to afford such a slow start this time due to the matches being only three sets long.

11.19It should be another proud day for the Brits too as Heather Watson, Laura Robson and Elena Balatcha are all in singles action. Baltach, who is taking on Serbian 11th seed Ana Ivanovic on Court 18, will later team up with Anne Keothavong in the women's doubles.

11.16However, first up we've got a handful of matches which include Andy Roddick vs. Martin Klizan, Victoria Azarenka vs. Irina-Camelia Begu and David Goffin vs. Juan Monaco.

11.14There's a host of big names in action today with arguably the biggest being Roger Federer and Serena Williams.

11.11Right, first things first - the sun is out at Wimbledon! Following some rather aggressive weather at the All England Club yesterday it looks like we'll be able to plow through this backlog of matches that we've got ourselves.
