Sir Alex Ferguson says that it was a "privilege" to watch Andy Murray win his first ever Grand Slam title at the US Open last night.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that it was more "nerve-wracking" watching Andy Murray in action in the US Open final than being on the touchline for a Premier League fixture.

The Scotsman was in attendance at Flushing Meadows last night to witness 25-year-old Murray win his first ever Grand Slam title after overcoming Novak Djokovic in five sets.

"I'm really proud for the boy," BBC Sport quotes Ferguson as saying. "The hard work and his progress, he's really top player. When he really needed to he showed it. That was a real test of a champion for me.

"It was a privilege [to be at the match]. I love tennis, I love watching tennis and to be involved tonight was a really special moment.

"It was more nerve racking than a Premier League match. I'm usually in control of my own situation but I wasn't in control tonight."

Murray became the first British player in 76 years to win a Grand Slam title.
