Roger Federer has admitted that his gameplan failed him in today's third-round defeat to Gael Monfils in the Monte Carlo Masters.
The 17-time Grand Slam champion lost 6-4 7-6(5) to the Frenchman, and in doing so relinquished a 5-3 lead in the tie-break.
"It was a good week for me anyways to come here and practise with the best, play a couple of matches," Federer told reporters. "At least it gives me some information, if I'm trying to be a bit positive right now.
"I never felt like things were really happening the way I wanted them to be going during the whole match. The way I felt at 5-3 sort of showed how I really felt, I guess."
Federer's fellow Swiss player Stanislas Wawrinka was also knocked out of the tournament following defeat to Grigor Dimitrov.
