Roger Federer "all for equal prize money" in tennis

Roger Federer believes that men and women should be given the same amount of prize money as the equal-pay row continues.

Seventeen-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer has added his thoughts to the equal-pay row by claiming that men and women should receive the same amount of prize money in tennis.

The row has been a major talking point this week after since-resigned Indian Wells tournament director Raymond Moore claimed that the female stars of the game should "thank God" for their male counterparts.

Novak Djokovic also caused controversy for suggesting that men should earn more money than women because the male stars of the game attract more spectators, but the world number one has since backtracked on his comments.

When asked for his thoughts in a press conference at the Miami Open, Federer told reporters: "I'm all for equal prize money. When I was fighting for prize money increases, especially at the slam level, I was always very aware of the fact that it would impact the women's game.

"I'm happy tennis has produced some of the greatest female athletes in the world."

Federer also claimed that tennis does not have a "major" doping problem in the wake of Maria Sharapova's failed drug test.
