John McEnroe: 'Ivan Lendle can lift Andy Murray'

John McEnroe believes that new coach Ivan Lendl will lift Andy Murray.

John McEnroe believes that his old rival Ivan Lendl can provide the missing ingredient needed to take Andy Murray on to the next level.

The Scottish world number four has lost three Grand Slam finals, including at the last two Australian Opens.

This record has forced Murray to enlist the help of the eight-time Grand Slam winner and initial results have looked promising, with Murray claiming the ATP Brisbane International.

"I hate to give credit to Lendl but [Murray] needed to do something out of the ordinary instead of going with the predictable re-tread," said McEnroe.

"This is definitely something that was, to me, unexpected. I didn't know that Lendl wanted to coach. He could bring something to the table, without a doubt.

"Lendl didn't win a major until he was 24 and guess what? Murray is 24 right now. So that could provide something worth it for Murray, I'm going to be paying attention to that, see how it works out."

Murray has been announced as < a href="/tennis/australian-open/news/murray-fourth-seed-for-australian-open_12801.html">seed number four for the Australian Open.
