Andy Murray demands better Grand Slam pay

Andy Murray says that other Grand Slam tournaments should follow the example set by French Open officials after they announced an increase in prize money.

Andy Murray believes that players should be better rewarded for their efforts in Grand Slam tournaments.

French Open officials have announced that the overall pay packet will increase by seven percent this year and the Scot said that Wimbledon should now follow suit.

The lower-ranked players have threatened strike action as they believe that the prize money is not fairly distributed.

Murray has now backed their protests and said that he hopes the situation can be reviewed.

"Each Slam wants to be the biggest on the calendar so it'd be hard to see one increasing the money and others not following," said the 24-year-old.

"For some people, tennis can be just a five or six-year career. A lot of the talk about striking and boycotting came from guys who were ranked between 20 and 100.

"They were unhappy with the way the prize money was distributed. Hopefully, next year it will be throughout the tournament, not just the first rounds."

Murray plays Viktor Troicki in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters.
