US Open winner Andy Murray has revealed that he does not think he played particularly well at Flushing Meadows, despite winning his maiden Grand Slam title.

Murray defeated Novak Djokovic in a memorable New York final, but puts his new-found success this summer down to a more pragmatic attitude to his game.

The Scot told The Independent: "I thought I played really well at the Olympics.

"At the US Open I didn't feel like I played that well. Obviously the conditions didn't help. But I played smart tennis.

"It wasn't always easy to serve well or to hit the ball cleanly from the back of the court, but I found a way to win the matches, even when I wasn't playing well. And that's something that was so important."

Murray made his first competitive appearance since becoming US Open champion in Tokyo on Tuesday, beating Ivo Karlovic in straight sets to progress to the second round of the Japan Open.
