Andy and Jamie Murray beat Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth in a breathless doubles encounter in the Davis Cup semi-finals to leave Great Britain one win away from the final.

Great Britain are one win away from the Davis Cup final thanks to Andy and Jamie Murray's doubles victory over Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth in the doubles clash of the semi-final against Australia.

The brothers prevailed in a thrilling four-hour five-setter 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-7 6-4 despite throwing away a golden opportunity to end the match in four when Andy Murray was serving for victory at 30-0.

Hewitt, playing in his last Davis Cup campaign, was superb as Australia fought to the wire after he and Groth had surrendered a 4-1 lead in the third set.

Andy Murray made it five games in a row to seal the third but the Scottish pair could not take advantage after coming from 5-4 down in the fourth to lead 6-5 and 30-0.

Australia edged the tie-break after Hewitt had saved a match point at the net, and a thrilling decider saw Britain take a 3-0 lead and then get pegged back to 3-3, before the brothers broke Groth's serve to secure the win.

Andy Murray praised the chemistry between himself and his brother after the match, telling reporters: "It was an incredible match, to come back from the disappointment of losing the fourth set.

"We kept creating chances, we stuck together like brothers should and managed to come up with enough good returns."

The victory means that Britain can progress to a first final since 1978 if Andy Murray beats Australian number one Bernard Tomic in Sunday's opening reverse singles match.
