British number two Heather Watson expresses her delight at ending her country's 24-year wait for a winner on the WTA tour.

Heather Watson has expressed her pride at becoming the first Briton to win a WTA tour title in 24 years.

The British number two beat Taiwan's Chang Kai-chen 7-5 5-7 7-6 in a topsy-turvy Japan Open final.

"I was in the changing room afterwards, changing my clothes, and I thought to myself, 'Did I really win?'" said Watson. "So it's just starting to settle in.

"I've worked so hard for this moment. That's why I practised so hard, ran all those miles, lifted all those weights - for moments like this.

"Britain has been breaking quite a few records recently. I'm happy I could break another one today. I'm proud to do this for my country."

Andy Murray ended Britain's 76-year wait for a Grand Slam champion last month when he overcame Novak Djokovic in a titanic, five-set US Open final.
