The world number one is aiming to become the first man to win six Masters 1000 tournaments in a single season.
Nadal edged through the opening set 7-5 before sealing the win with the same scoreline in the second.
Waiting for the 13-time Grand Slam champion in the next round is Polish 14th seed Jerzy Janowicz.
