Stanislas Wawrinka advanced to the third round of the Paris Masters this afternoon with a straight-sets victory over Bernard Tomic.
It was the pair's first meeting on the ATP Tour and Wawrinka, the world number four, got off to a perfect start by breaking Tomic in the Australian's first service game.
The Swiss consolidated to move 3-0 up and a single break was all he needed to claim the opening set 6-3.
The second was much tighter and Tomic was close to nicking the set in Wawrinka's last service game before the tie-break, but he could not convert on two set points.
In the breaker Tomic was on top in the early stages and at one point led 5-2 before Wawrinka won six of the next seven points to claim victory in just over an hour-and-a-half.
Wawrinka, who reached the semi-finals in the French capital last year, will face either Victor Troicki or 15th seed Feliciano Lopez in the last 16.
