Kevin Anderson has reached the second round of the Madrid Open thanks to a three-set win over Radek Stepanek.
The South African world number 19 lost the opening set 3-6, but he responded in the second by breaking his Czech opponent twice to clinch it 6-3.
Anderson broke at the start of the third to establish a 2-1 lead, and he was able to save three break points before going on to finish the match 6-4.
His reward for beating Stepanek is a second-round clash with sixth seed Tomas Berdych.
