Marin Cilic has booked his spot in the second round at the Madrid Open after beating Jiri Vesely in straight sets this evening.
There was little between the players in the first set, with the US Open champion saving two break points to keep the opener level at 5-5.
After holding serve in the 11th game, Cilic finally had a chance against the Czech's serve, clinching the set with his first break point of the match.
The Croatian appeared to have started well in the second as Vesely dropped his serve again, allowing his opponent to take a 2-0 lead.
Vesely hit back straight away, breaking Cilic for the first time, but he was unable to maintain his momentum, losing his remaining two service games as the ninth seed wrapped up the final four games in quick succession.
Cilic will face either Fernando Verdasco or Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the next round.
