World number seven Ana Ivanovic has been dumped out of the Madrid Open in the third round thanks to a dramatic three-set defeat to Carla Suarez Navarro.
An up-and-down opening set saw Suarez Navarro fail to covert four set points before Ivanovic missed the chance to convert two of her own.
However, it was the Spaniard who earned a decisive break to take a 6-5 lead on her way to closing out 7-5.
While there were plenty of twists and turns during the first set, the second was emphatically one-sided as Ivanovic broke twice to take it 6-1 inside half an hour.
Suarez Navarro had the opportunity to serve out the match when she moved into a 5-3 lead in the decider, but Ivanovic broke back to get the contest back on serve.
Despite the Serb's efforts to put pressure back on Suarez Navarro, the world number 12 sprung a surprise by breaking again to seal a 7-5 1-6 6-4 triumph.
