Angelique Kerber has booked her spot in the third round of the Madrid Open with a 3-6 6-4 7-5 victory over Svetlana Kuznetsova on Wednesday.
A close first set brought just one break of serve, with Kuznetsova breaking at 2-3 before serving her way into a 5-2 lead. Kerber did manage to hold her next service game, but a strong performance from Kuznetsova allowed the Russian to move into a one-set lead.
An incredible five breaks of serve occurred in the second set, but it was Kerber that rallied to move into a 5-4 lead, before breaking to take the match into a final set.
Kerber took charge of the third when the German broke to move into a 2-0 lead, but a break for Kuznetsova kept the match on serve. There proved to be one final twist, however, with Kerber breaking at 5-6 to book her spot in the next round.
