Gael Monfils has set up a third-round meeting with fellow Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the Miami Masters by edging out Serbia's Filip Krajinovic.
The first set was a topsy-turvy affair, with Monfils breaking in the first game before world number 96 Krajinovic rattled off four games in a row to move clear.
Monfils broke back to get within one game, but then Krajinovic resumed control with his third break of the set before serving it out 6-3.
The second was a much simpler affair as Monfils eased to a 6-2 success with a pair of breaks to send the match into a third set.
In the decider, neither man was able to break, but Monfils did have four match points which he was unable to take, so a tie-break was required.
Krajinovic got off to the better start by moving 2-0 in front, but soon 16th seed Monfils was in control and clinched victory by winning the breaker 7-4.
