Rafael Nadal has had his hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the Gerry Weber Open dashed after a stunning 6-3 6-4 victory for Philipp Kohlschreiber.

The world number two showed signs of struggle in the opening exchanges of the clash and was stunned after going three to love down in the first set.

Kohlschreiber displayed composed movement across the court and managed to blast a number of impressive forehands over the net, which prevented Nadal from imposing his own game on the contest.

While the Spaniard attempted to come into his own, it was too late for the 26-year-old, who relinquished the opening set and showed signs of French Open fatigue.

Nadal, who became the Roland Garros champion for the seventh time on Monday, began challenging in the second set and putting pressure on his German opponent, but Kohlschreiber maintained his game and stopped himself from faltering.

Despite the Spaniard's attempts at getting a foothold in the game, his 28-year-old opponent held firm and managed to cause an upset and knock the former world number one out of the tournament.
