Frenchman Nicolas Mahut is through to the second round of the Paris Masters after he defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero this evening.
The 29-year-old, who was competing despite the recent death of his two-year-old nephew, registered an early break against former world number one Ferrero before going on to claim the set 6-2.
Ferrero managed to break in the next set, but he was unable to press home that advantage.
Qualifier Mahut responded by producing a break of his own before going on to win the match 6-2 6-3.
He will now take on David Ferrer in the next round.
